Jack Harper

"Never have I met someone with so much talent and so little sense. If a mind is a terrible thing to waste, then that boy is bloody tragedy."

At a Glance

Race: Hyur (Midlander)
Gender: Male
Age: ~30
Height: 5' 11"
Profession: Healer/Surgeon
Server: Mateus

Possessed of a brilliant smile and an over-eager desire to show it, Jack is about as much of an extrovert as one can ever expect to meet. High-energy and with an even higher penchant for finding trouble, he seems youthful for his age — and cocky well beyond it. Then again, saving lives is ego-inflating work, and he's saved more than enough to keep his nice and plump.

Physically speaking, he's on the taller side for Midlanders, bordering on lanky. He also has a bit more hair than one might want on a surgeon, but rest assured, the whole mess is always pinned back behind his head when working on a patient — he might even be sober while he's working, too! The only other notable feature of the wiry Hyur is his taste for the color red, and to see him wearing anything else is likely a sign that the next Astral Calamity is just around the corner.

Background

The youngest of four brothers, Jack was born in Gridania to a family of minstrels. As such, his early life was defined by hand-me-downs and impromptu performances — the first of which taught him to be scrappy and resourceful, and the latter of which cultivated in him the vivacious 'bedside manner' he would carry into his future career. Growing up, his family had almost no money, but rather than instill a sense of frugality in Jack, this instead made him insatiable for the finer things in life, and any money he has managed to get his hands on since has mostly been wasted on vice.

As he grew older, Jack also grew more competitive, soon hungry to find ways of setting himself apart from his older brothers as they mostly followed their parents into entertainment. Instead of join them, Jack forged his own path and enrolled at the Conjurer's Guild as soon as he was able. A quick study and gifted with considerable aether, he did well there — at least for as long as his studies could keep him occupied. Before long, however, Jack began to grow bored with the tried-and-true methods of conjuration and healing. Wanting to expand his abilities beyond what the guild had to offer, he began to experiment, dabbling in other types of magic... and in less-than-ethical means of experimentation. When the Guild became aware of his extra-circular activities, he was immediately excommunicated and left to fend for himself.

Now blacklisted by the major Guilds and the three Grand Companies, he does whatever he can to scrape by as a freelance healer — and to covertly continue the experiments that saw him censured in the first place.

Hooks

Conjurer's Castoff: Since Jack left the Conjurer's Guild under less-than-friendly circumstances, many rumors have swirled in the wake of his departure. If your character is familiar with the guild, they may have heard whispers about malpractice — or maybe even necromancy committed by his hands.

Shady Surgeon: He may not be a guild-sanctioned healer, but Jack's skills in the restorative arts are still considerable, nonetheless. If your character finds themselves injured under suspicious circumstances and doesn't want the attention that might come from seeking a more 'upstanding' healer, Jack will be more than happy to patch you up discreetly — for a price.

Bad With Money: Jack is prone to spending gil almost as quickly as he earns it, and almost always on frivolous things. He is a regular fixture of the Golden Saucer (when he can afford to be) and an irregular fixture of the Quicksand (when he wants to drink away the sorrow of losing). He is, notwithstanding, a rather formidable Triple Triad player.

OOC

21+ player with 10ish years of experience RPing. I'm US-based (UTC-6), and available in-game most evenings. I'm also available on Discord most of the time, but prefer to RP in-game whenever possible.

As far as RP goes, I don't have many limits. I mostly just try to adhere to the lore, and appreciate other players who do so as well. If you're able to do that, and can respect IC/OOC separation, then we'll probably get along great! My only caveat is that romantically-inclined RP must be slow-burn. Unless our characters have known each other for at least a month, romance is off limits.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask, but keep in mind that I keep these carrds brief for a reason; if a question is better answered IC than OOC, I'm gonna make you work for it.
